Raspberry Pi 3B+ Parts List
Raspberry Pi 3B+
GPS Dongle
Field Power Options
While in the field, I prefer to run my Raspberry Pi off a small battery pack that can deliver suitable voltage and amps.
Micro USB Cable
I found that the micro USB cable can be a frequent point of failure and noticed that not all USB cables are created equal. To avoid getting “low voltage” warnings from your Pi, ensure that your cable is capable of handling more amps and has a properly gauged wire. This one below is made from 21 AWG wire and supports 2.5A.
Battery Pack
I love the Talentcell battery pack because it is easily charged off 12 volts and has a power switch. This switch eliminates the need for the additional power switch cable that is included in the Starter Kit above. One less cable is one less failure point.
It also has a footprint that is roughly the same size as the Raspberry Pi, so they’re great to stack and rubber band together.
WiFi Adapter
If you plan to use your Raspberry Pi 3B+ with a Mobilinkd TNC2/3, you may want to consider using an external USB WiFi adapter. I found that the Raspberry Pi would have unstable WiFi connections when using the onboard WiFi adapter while using Bluetooth. The external WiFi adapter behaves much better with the onboard Bluetooth.
There a couple of issue reports (1552 and 1444) that have yet to be resolved as of October 2021 that discuss the WiFi/Bluetooth problem.
